Today we looked at images of human-made and natural structures (you can view the images in the previous post). We talked about the things the pictures have in common and as well as how are they different (compare and contrast!). Then, we spent some time thinking about the inquiry question: What is a structure? Each student wrote down or drew a picture of their answers to the question on an index card. We then organized the cards by content. Ms Soltes helped us come up with three (3) groups: materials, examples of structures, and purpose. We noticed that the examples category has the most index cards. We talked about how it would be a good idea to learn more about the materials that are used to build structures as well as the why they are built (structures have different purposes!). Here's what our brainstorm session looked like after we sorted the cards together:
